Student housing as an asset class: (German)

Change processes on the Austrian student housing market using the example of Vienna and Innsbruck

Abstract

The conference “Stadt.Land.Wohnen. Regional Housing Markets between Boom and Crisis” took place in Salzburg on November 6 and 7, 2023. It was a cooperation project organized by the Institute for Urban and Regional Research (ÖAW) and the Department of Social Science Geography (Paris Lodron University Salzburg). The intention of this event was, on the one hand, to address the current challenges facing the housing markets in their regional differentiation. Topics such as property price bubbles, the affordability of housing, precarious housing and displacement processes have so far been dealt with primarily from the perspective of large cities or only at a national level. In contrast, this event aimed to focus on the regional dimension of housing. Another aim of this event was to create a stronger network within the Austrian housing market research scene, which is highly dispersed both spatially and in terms of disciplines. The conference was therefore thematically open and was not oriented towards disciplinary boundaries, but rather towards current topics and problem areas in housing market research. The two-day event was aimed at academics, master’s and doctoral students as well as post-docs and practitioners who deal with different aspects of regional housing market dynamics. This anthology includes presentations from all six sessions of the conference: “Precarious housing, homelessness and inclusion”, “Vacancy in the housing market: findings and strategies”, “Methods of housing market analysis”, “Dynamics in regional housing markets”, “Non-profit” and “Local responses to the housing market crisis”.
