Teaching
The Urban Studies Working Group teaches across several curricula, including the Bachelor´s Programme in Geography, the outgoing Master´s programme in Spatial Planning and Spatial Research and the newly established Master´s programme in Geographies of Global Change and Sustainability Transformations (GGCST). This new Master´s programme, starting in Winter term 2025/2026, includes a Specialisation Track in Urban Studies, which equips students with inter- & transdisciplinary skills and competencies to diagnose urban sustainability challenges and to co-develop actions to address them. We work with place-based and innovative pedagogies to connect urban research and practice with a clear intent to foster Urban Sustainability Transformations. Our teaching and learning critically explores urban concepts, theories and methods that are relevant for future urban professionals – including those working in public administration, research, policymaking, the private sector and civil society organisations. Therefore, several of our courses actively engage with ongoing research projects at the Urban Sustainability Living Lab as well as with actors beyond the university, for example, in formats such as the Urban Research to Practice – Science for Policy Hackathon, our project seminar, and the Master´s thesis.

December 18, 2025Diagnosing policy pathways in Vienna: News from the Science for Policy Hackathon
While urban sustainability is often discussed through large strategies and long-term plans, many of the forces shaping a city’s future emerge through the everyday actions of individuals and groups. They show up in how people move through their neighbourhoods, how food is bought and stored at home, how public space is shared, and how different departments within a city communicate. When we – 21 students in the Urban Research to Practice: Science for Policy Hackathon course – began exploring key policy challenges in Vienna, including the need to develop multifunctional public spaces, enhance the quantity and quality of green space, and strengthen climate education and awareness, we quickly saw that seemingly separate issues were deeply intertwined. -
