Abstract
This open access book addresses the contribution of cities to sustainable development. The authors present the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agreed upon by the member states of the United Nations in 2015. They show how the goals are implemented at the municipal level and what challenges arise. Approaches to sustainable urban development are presented and national and international examples illustrate the localization of the SDGs. This is complemented by research approaches to support sustainability transformations in joint work between science and practice.
